how do you have an abortion?

There are two types of abortion procedures. How far along you are will determine the method of abortion and the cost. An abortion is a serious medical procedure.  It is important to know all the risks and side effects to make a decision that is best for your health and safety.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

This is typically available if you’re in the early weeks of pregnancy—usually up to around 10 weeks. It involves taking two medications that end the pregnancy.  The first medication interrupts pregnancy development by blocking progesterone, prompting detachment of an implanted embryo. The second medication is taken later to induce strong contractions to empty the uterus. There are side effects most often associated with this type of abortion including nausea, cramping and bleeding.  It is important the medication is administered under medical supervision. Serious complications can occur after a medical abortion including infection, heavy bleeding, and incomplete abortion.

Surgical Abortion

A surgical abortion is a medical procedure done in a clinic by a trained healthcare provider. There are various types of surgical abortion involving opening the cervix and using medical instruments or suction to remove the baby from the uterus. The method depends on how far along the pregnancy is.  There are side effects most often associated with this type of abortion including nausea, cramping and bleeding.  Serious risks are associated with a surgical abortion including heavy bleeding, infection and permanent damage.
